Chill out through craft: create your own perfume

“Self care is how you take your power back” – Lalah Delia

We know, motivational quotes are nor really our style either, but this one seems to capture exactly what we’re trying to say.

Nowadays being BUSY it’s like wearing a badge of honor. It’s true, we do live in an always-ON-world, where our work email is at our finger tips and the first thing we see when we wake up in the morning. And yes, life’s about achievements for most of us. But also, it’s mostly about how you get there.

Being busy doesn’t mean that you’re also successful. Going through back to back meetings & tasks without having time to eat will get you through. For a while. But our energy supply is not endless. We need time to recharge. Even for the lucky ones who love what they do. It’s so much easier to lose track of time when you love what you do. But taking care of yourself is important. Because that’s what fuels you, what gives you the power to move mountains and open new perspectives. It’s also about the journey. About living life while you’re at it.

So how do you do it? How do you fit it in your o-so-busy schedule? Well, the trick is to find something that you love doing. And no, it doesn’t mean that you need to take time off and run off the grid. Just find an activity for a few hours after work that allows you to relax, disconnect and recharge. Like for example – a fun crafty project.

Chillout through craft – Why does craft make us feel good?

Well, according to the famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi – known as one of the founders of positive psychology –  crafting allows us to enter a “flow” state, a perfect immersive state of balance between skill and challenge.

“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times . . . The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile” (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

You know that feeling when you’re “in the zone”? This is what flow feels like. Flow occurs when your skill level and the challenge at hand are equal.

So why does crafting make some people achieve a flow state? Well, because it helps you both relax, disconnect (taking your mind off things) while also challenging you to learn new skills and discover new things.
